CHIJMES Singapore: Best Family Picnic Spot with Historic Chapel (Updated 2026)

Iconic Gothic Architecture, Open Lawns & Alfresco Family Dining in Singapore

Image of Chjmes Singapore

Step into a peaceful slice of Singapore history at CHIJMES, a beautifully restored 19th-century convent and National Monument in the heart of the Civic District. The striking white Gothic chapel, arched cloisters, and expansive main lawn create the perfect open-air setting for families to picnic, play, and unwind together — without the usual city hustle.

The site, built starting with Caldwell House (1840–1841), became home to the Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus in 1854. The famous “Gate of Hope” (a replica still stands today) was where abandoned baby girls were once left in the care of the nuns. The convent operated as a school and orphanage until 1983, when the sisters relocated. After careful restoration, CHIJMES reopened in 1996 as a vibrant heritage lifestyle hub — blending rich history with modern family fun.  Click here for the Heritage Trail information.

Kids can run freely on the grass, chase bubbles (or each other), and pose for memorable photos by the iconic chapel arches while parents relax with coffee or a meal at one of the many alfresco spots. It’s fully stroller-friendly with easy access, nearby changing facilities, and a welcoming vibe for all ages. CHIJMES is now officially pet-friendly too — ideal for families with furry siblings!

Little Steps Insider Tips While Visiting Chjmes:

  • Combine with a short walk to the Singapore Art Museum or Merlion for a full half-day adventure.
  • Many restaurants offer highchairs and kid-friendly options.
