The Rompin district is located southeast of the state of Pahang and serves as the gateway to Tioman Island. The choice of accommodation at Kuala Rompin is rather limited and runs from budget to mid-range. The nicest in the area would be Villea Rompin Resort & Golf where you can rest, relax and indulge in a round of golf, or the budget-friendly D’Layaran Hotel & Cafe Rompin.
On Tioman Island, you’ll find a wider selection of lodgings including the 5-star Japamala Resort by Samadhi, great for honeymoons and romantic escapades, or family-friendly options like Berjaya Tioman Resort and Tunamaya Beach & Spa Resort.
Rompin State Park, also known as Taman Negeri Rompin (TNR) in the district of Rompin, Pahang was gazetted by the Pahang State Government as Permanent Reserved Forest and is one of the oldest rainforests in the world. Visitors are required to pay an admission fee ranging from RM$10 to RM$50 at the entrance. A number of exciting nature-friendly activities can be done here including kayaking, hiking, jungle trekking, birdwatching, swimming in the waterfall, and camping. Best visited during the months of April to October, the park may be closed during the monsoon season so be sure to check before planning your trip.
Avid anglers will know that the waters off the coast of Kuala Rompin are extremely popular for sailfish fishing. Attracting fishing enthusiasts from all over the world, the season typically lasts from March through October, and there are a number of operators you can contact for this exciting experience such as Billseeker Sportfishing, Magic Billfish Charters, and Legion of Xtraordinary Fishermen.
Best carried out between the months of April to June, visitors can go clam picking at Sungai Pahang. Book this activity through your hotel or local travel agent, and a boat will take you from the jetty to the shallow parts of the river. Here you can wade in the waters during low tide and feel your way around the riverbed for clams. Be prepared to get soaked though, and you may want to bring extra clothes to change into.
A trip to this seaside town of Kuala Rompin is incomplete unless you've had a taste of the mouth-watering, freshwater prawns sourced from the local rivers. Look out for their simple, no frills seafood eateries like Gerai Makan Mak Ngah Udang Galah Sepit Biru, Gerai Makan Azizah Udang Galah, Restoran Udang Galah Orang Minyak, and Kedai Makan Selera Serdang for seafood dishes cooked in the local kampung style. You can even purchase some fresh prawns to take home with you at some of these locations.
Kuala Rompin happens to be one of two entry points into Tioman Island, located some 75km away. A terrific spot for an island getaway, you can rent the necessary gear for some snorkeling and diving here. The island's best claim to fame is having its hilly beach views incorporated as the backdrop of the 1958 Hollywood hit 'South Pacific'. To get to Tioman, catch a ferry ride at the Tanjung Gemok jetty and it'll take you under two hours to reach this island destination.
