Cape D’Aguilar Lighthouse, otherwise known as the Hok Tsui Beacon, is a declared monument of Hong Kong and the oldest of Hong Kong’s five remaining pre-war lighthouses. Now, the area, located at the tip of the Shek’O peninsula, is Hong Kong’s first marine reserve. Right next to the popular Dragon’s Back trail, Cape D’Aguilar is a road-less-traveled but is definitely worth the trek! All it takes is an hour’s walk along a paved road from the Cape D’Aguilar Road bus stop to reach the end of the peninsula. The trail is flat, mostly shaded, and stroller-friendly, making it a gentle hike that is family- and pet-friendly. However, be sure to stay alert for cars and trucks that may pass along the road.
What to expect?
Although the path is mostly straightforward, about 3 kilometers into the walk will be a radio transmitting station, which is private property covered with “Do Not Enter” warning signs. Simply follow the dirt path along the left side of the entrance as it takes you around the station fences and back to the paved road. Here, there will be a fork in the road, with the left leading to the lighthouse and the right to the Marine Reserve.
The Marine Reserve has a pebbled beach, and though swimming is prohibited, here lies an opportunity for adventure! Whether it be climbing the rocks or venturing across the beach, Cape D’Aguilar has much to offer. Next to the lighthouse and marine reserve are the skeletal remains of the killer whale named Miss Willy, and if you continue further along the beach, you will find the arch-shaped Crab Cave, which is the perfect Instagram spot!
