Known for its authentic Japanese vibe, well-groomed slopes, and family-friendly perks, Furano feels like a hidden treasure for parents and little skiers alike. With wide beginner runs, kids under 12 skiing free, and no long lift lines, it’s perfect for building confidence on the snow without the crowds.

A scenic 2-hour drive from New Chitose Airport (or about 2.5–3 hours from Sapporo), Furano impressed us…read on to see why!

Shea’s Insider Tips:

  • After skiing in Rusutsu, Tomamu, and Niseko, Furano stood out as a truly special mountain town — authentic, relaxed, and surprisingly easy for a solo parent traveling with three teens. It offers authentic Japanese ski vibes, uncrowded slopes, and hassle-free logistics. Great for families who ski hard by day and unwind with onsens/food by night — without the mega-resort chaos. She was especially surprised with the food choices available and the quality – unbelievable!  Read on for her favorites below.

  • Shea stayed at Fenix Furano, a modern ski-in/ski-out condominium hotel right across from the Kitanomine Gondola (just steps away for quick slope access). With stunning views of Furano town and Mount Tokachi, spacious apartments (1-3 bedrooms, full kitchens, multiple beds), on-site restaurant, ski lockers, and concierge, it felt luxurious yet practical for a family group.

  • How To get to Furano Hokkaido

HOW TO GET TO FURANO? New Chitose Airport + 3 Hours Drive!

Families fly into New Chitose Airport (the main gateway for Hokkaido skiing) and head to Furano, about 2.5–3 hours away depending on the option.

A few key tips from Shea's visit:

    • Japan Arrival Card:  This will save you a lot of time!  Just fill out the online Japan Arrival Card form, and you can skip the queue on arrival.  Be sure to save the QR code.  We highly recommend doing this in advance!
    • Be sure to check your flight arrival time!  The bus is the preferred way to get to Furano but there are limitations for late arriving flights.
    • Snacks:  On exiting customs, there is a kid-favorite snack store (Lawsons) to stock up before you take your journey to Furano!  Water, Japanese treats, and more - we love Lawsons.

Best ways to get to Furano (updated for 2026/2027  winter season):

Direct ski bus (easiest & most popular for families): Hokkaido Access Network / Hokkaido Resort Liner or similar services run direct from New Chitose Airport Domestic Terminal to key Furano spots like New Furano Prince Hotel or Natulux Hotel. Takes 2.5–3 hours, costs around ¥6,000 per adult (child discounts often apply), with comfort breaks. Daily service Dec–Mar; book ahead for flight timings. Super convenient—no transfers, luggage handled, and drops near slopes/hotels.

    • Insider Tip! This is what Shea Stanley and her family did, and it was super easy!  You will exit customs at the airport, grab snacks at the convenience store, then meet the Hokkaido Resort Liner on the opposite side (clearly marked).
    • Insider Tip!  Be sure to check your flights.  If you arrive too late, the bus will not be an option so you will need to arrange a private transfer, which is fabulous but a lot more expensive.

    Book Bus To Furano

Private Transfer From New Chitose Airport To Furano:

If flights arrive late, private transfers or taxis provide flexibility, often with car seats available for little ones.  This is a fast way to get to Furano as well.  You can book via Klook here for your group.

    Book Bus To Furano

Train option (scenic & JR Pass-friendly): From New Chitose Airport, take the JR Rapid Airport train to Sapporo (37 min), then transfer to a Limited Express (e.g., Lilac or similar) to Takikawa or Asahikawa, and connect to the JR Furano Line local train to Furano Station. Total ~4 hours, ¥3,900–¥7,000 one-way (covered by JR Hokkaido Rail Pass or Sapporo–Furano Area Pass for unlimited rides in the region). Great for views, but involves 1–2 changes—pack light for kids. Many hotels offer pick-up from Furano Station.

If you're only traveling in this specific Hokkaido area (e.g., Chitose/Sapporo to Furano/Biei/Asahikawa), a cheaper regional option like the Sapporo-Furano Area Pass (4 days, around ¥11,000 pre-purchase) also covers this exact route unlimited times—but the nationwide JR Pass works too if you already have or need it for other parts of Japan.

    • Insider Tip!   Note that this journey option does add a lot of time to the travel - booking in advance is not required.  If you are looking for more travel in Japan, you can use the link below for the Japan Rail Pass.  Or book the Sapporo Area Pass, which is more affordable.

    Japan Rail Pass

Sapporo Area Pass - 4 days

Attentive service includes kid amenities, making it great for small children or multi-gen trips. In summer, nearby farms and cycling add variety—a welcoming spot where everyone feels at ease!

  • FURANO LIFT TICKETS: Get The Scoop On Lift Passes + Kids Under 12 Ski For Free!!

If you're heading to Furano this winter, the lift pass setup is refreshingly straightforward—no confusing tiers or hidden zones. One ticket gets you full access to both the Kitanomine and Furano Zones, linking up 9 lifts and 28 trails total. It's a smart system that covers day skiing right through to night ops (when they're running), and the whole process feels efficient and hassle-free. I've always appreciated how easy it is to just get on the mountain without drama.

Bottom line: Furano's lift tickets are one of the more user-friendly setups in Hokkaido—affordable, inclusive (free kids!), and flexible with the points system. Powder, long runs, and minimal fuss? That's a solid win in my book. If you're going, grab 'em early for peaks, but don't sweat it otherwise.

    Book Lift Tickets In Advance

A few key tips from Shea's visit:

    • Should I pre-book lift passes for Furano? You can pre-book lift tickets for discounts.  Klook has some good deals. If you are traveling during peak times such as CNY or Christmas, pre-booking just makes things move a bit quicker.  Shea visited the week after CNY, and there were no lines, so grabbing lift tickets was done on the spot and was super easy.
    • What are the options? The lineup is flexible and covers most needs:
      • 1-Day Pass — Full access from opening (usually 8:30 AM) until close, including night skiing. Regular season (mid-Dec to mid-Mar): ¥8,000 for adults (19-59), ¥7,500 for seniors (60+). Early season (late Nov-early Dec) or spring (late Mar-May): drops to ¥6,500 adult / ¥6,000 senior. Super value for a full powder day with those epic views.
      • Half-Day / Hourly Passes — Great if you're not going all-in. 3-hour: ¥6,400 adult / ¥5,900 senior; 5-hour: ¥7,200 adult / ¥6,700 senior. Starts from purchase time—perfect for late starts or half-days.
      • Point Pass System — This is clever for casual or mixed days. 1 point = 1 lift ride (¥1,100 per single point ticket). Bundles like 12 single rides for ¥9,200 make sense if you're not riding every lift constantly. High-speed lifts (e.g., Furano Downhill No. 1) cost 2 points, ropeway/gondola one-way 3 points. Love this flexibility—feels modern and waste-free.
      • Multi-Day & Longer — Consecutive days available (though exact 2-day prices aren't always highlighted—expect around double the 1-day with some savings). Season passes exist if you're local or staying long (adult ¥90,000), but for visitors, stick to daily/multi.

Kids Ski For Free In Furano? Seriously?

Yes—and it's one of the best perks! Children 12 and under (up to elementary school age) get free lift tickets. Just head to a ticket office to pick them up in advance (they're not auto-issued at gates, and sometimes a small refundable deposit applies). This makes Furano super family-friendly—huge win if you're traveling with little ones.

The Hokkaido Powder Belt Pass: Worth It?

If your trip hits multiple spots, this is a gem. The 5-of-10-day pass lets you ski any 5 days within 10 from first use at Furano (both zones), Hoshino Resorts Tomamu, and Kamui Ski Links. Price hovers around ¥38,000 adult—great value for a flexible Hokkaido loop. Ideal if you're based in the area and want variety without daily buys.

    Buy Hokkaido Powder Belt Pass

Where to Grab Your Passes: Easy pickup spots, often from the afternoon before your first day!  Shea picked up the day of skiiing and that was totally fine as well.

    • Kitanomine Gondola Ticket Office — Perfect if staying in the Kitanomine area.  Shea picked hers up here and it was a breeze!
    • Furano Prince Hotel or Shin-Furano Prince Hotel — Convenient for hotel guests.
