It has been a tough year for all of us and to celebrate our spirit of resilience in a challenging year, National Gallery Singapore will launch a series of on-site and online initiatives for the public to mark National Day together, at the Gallery, or from home. The initiatives aim to support Singaporeans and celebrate compassion and kindness amidst adversity, through art.
From now till August 30, 2020, 7pm to 12 midnight, the Gallery’s façade will be illuminated in the national colors of red and white in a show of solidarity. Home to our national art collection, the exterior of the Gallery’s veiled canopy facing the Padang will feature projections of 60 original artworks by artists in Singapore. In an open call, the Gallery invited visual artists to provide a new perspective into the National Collection, in relation to current realities experienced. Selected artworks will form a rotating projection on the Gallery’s central veiled canopy, accentuated by colorful lights on its façade.
By participating in the light-up, the Gallery is able to support local production houses, as well as artists and cultural workers, in a year where many events and showcases have been canceled or postponed.
