In this Little Steps interview with Kasson Bratton, you can get to know their new Head of School!
Here, Kasson talks about his international teaching career and reveals his three favorite kids books. He also stresses the importance of creating a sense of belonging in school.
“We know that when students feel a strong sense of belonging – that they are seen, known, and understood – they are happier, more confident, and more successful learners. Having this at the heart of our Mission Statement sets us apart as a school and as a community.”
Do you have a nickname?
Not exactly a nickname, but I actually go by my middle name, which is Kasson. It’s a family name from my mother’s side.
Where were you born and where did you grow up?
I was born in Virginia in the US and grew up there before moving to Oregon for graduate school. I began my international school career shortly after and with stints in Haiti, Scotland, Qatar, Nanjing, and now Hong Kong - I haven't looked back!
Where do you live in the city and why do you love it there?
I live in Sai Kung and what’s not to love?! The mountains and sea, the Country Park, wild cows and monkeys, good coffee shops and restaurants, a laid back and tight-knit community. It’s a special place.
What's in your lunchbox?
I typically enjoy the cuisine of our ace in-house catering team, HKAEats. My favorite dish so far is their cheese and spinach puff fresh from the oven. Yum!
What or who inspired you to become a Head?
Once I recognized quality leadership as a leverage point for learning across a school, I was hooked. I am inspired daily by the efforts of teachers to support all students in their care.
Describe your school in five words or less
Nurturing a culture of belonging.
What's your favorite thing on your desk and why?
My coffee mug. It keeps me going!
What are your three favorite children's books?
Change Sings by Amanda Gorman, Fox in Socks by Dr. Seuss and Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak.
What is the best way for parents to be involved in their children’s education?
Keep them curious! Model your own wonder for the world around you. Celebrate good questions as much as good answers. Reward their effort, kindness, and determination as much as grades and test scores. Be relentless about the importance of sleep and keep digital devices out of their bedrooms!
Any tips for parents when applying for schools?
Get past the marketing. Focus your questions on the student experience. Talk to current parents, students, and alumni. Be as open about your child’s interests, needs, and strengths, as well as your expectations as a parent. This way you can enter into a trusting and lasting partnership with the school of your choice.
What's the best advice a teacher or Head ever gave you?
Pride comes before the fall. Be humble, work hard, and stay curious. Good things will usually happen. I've been extremely fortunate in this regard.
