How To Enjoy Firefly Season in Hong Kong?
The Tai Po Kau Nature Trail And Sha Lo Tung
Let the lemon-lime dotted lights be your guide! Fireflies in Hong Kong are lighting up the summer night skies. Take the kids out to hike one of Hong Kong’s many trails, just as dusk sets in, to see the luminous glow of the lovebugs all around you. From wee ones to adults, this is an unforgettable memory for all.
Where to see fireflies in Hong Kong?
- The Tai Po Kau Nature Trail – Fireflies favor high hills with clean streams and there are several spots to see these friendly bright lights. The Tai Po Kau Nature Trail, off Tai Po Road, is easy to reach and one of the better places to catch all the action. If you can, take the trip out on a weeknight to steer clear of the crowds. The Red Trail is particularly popular as it offers streams, ponds, and waterfalls too.
- Sha Lo Tung – Head over for fireflies within the Pat Sin Leng Country Park. There are also 2 abandoned Hakka Villages to explore here.
- Tai Mo Shan – The largest mountain in Hong Kong also has the largest firefly (The Elephant Firefly). Try and spot it near the waterfall by the trail by the Youth Hostels Association.
It is high season for fireflies in Hong Kong, so catch the lovebugs while you can! The best months to spot fireflies are late summer through October. Bring a flashlight, bug spray, and water too!
