Hong Kong’s first Montessori Middle School , the International Montessori School (IMS) empowers adolescents by transforming leadership skills into real-world action. IMS Stanley campus is buzzing with excitement following the the launch of their Cosmic Cafe in December 2025. This student-run business shows how IMS middle schoolers connect their classroom learning to real-world business success.
The confidence seen in IMS Middle Schoolers isn’t accidental; it is rooted in real world entrepreneurship that begins at primary years.
While many schools introduce service, action, and creative projects (CAS) in secondary school, IMS integrates these concepts at the Primary level, where students are already forming teams, designing products, and selling them at school and local markets.
For parents who are looking for a school or education system that balances academic depth with real-world readiness, IMS invites you to see this transformation in person.
Visit IMS campuses and meet the confident, globally-minded young entrepreneurs who are not just preparing for the future—they are building it.
Moving beyond the confines of traditional exam-driven models, the IMS Middle School programme uses interdisciplinary project-based learning (PBL) to bridge the gap between theory and practice.
At IMS, the classroom is not a place for passive listening; it is a dynamic hub of innovation. By tackling real-world challenges, students master complex academic concepts in mathematics, science, and the humanities not through memorisation, but through meaningful application and active contribution. Whether calculating the costs of a business or researching a supply chain, this approach helps students see the real-world impact of their work, turning rigorous learning into a meaningful contribution to the community.
The crown jewel of the curriculum is real-world entrepreneurship through the student-run business, Cosmic Cafe, which opened its doors in December 2025. This is not just a classroom project; it is a high-stakes business journey that began in August. Students have navigated every stage of a startup, from market research and funding to full-scale operations.
Students took part in a Shark Tank-style experience, drafting formal business proposals and pitching to the school’s founders and external investors to secure startup capital. They defended price points, justified marketing strategies, and designed a brand identity from the ground up.
The teenage years are a period of immense change, requiring a delicate balance of independence and guidance. To support this, IMS has recruited a world-class team of AMI (Association Montessori Internationale) trained adolescent educators and curriculum directors from around the world.
In the project-based learning (PBL) environment, these teachers act as mentors rather than lecturers. They understand the unique temperament and strengths of each student, ensuring everyone finds their role at any given time, whether as a CEO, accountant, or designer. By providing a safe and respectful space to take risks, IMS mentors help students build self-worth rooted in real achievement rather than grades alone.
