Changi Airport Opens First Calm Room At Terminal 2 For Neurodivergent Travellers

A Soothing Sanctuary Designed To Ease Travel Stress For Passengers With Invisible Disabilities

Changi Airport Terminal 2 Calm Room Singapore

Changi Airport has unveiled its first-ever Calm Room, a thoughtfully designed sensory-friendly space to support neurodivergent travellers and their caregivers. Located in Terminal 2’s departure transit area, this over 200-square-metre haven provides a peaceful retreat for those who may experience sensory overload or anxiety while travelling. The new facility is part of the CARE@Changi programme, which aims to create a more inclusive and compassionate travel experience for everyone.

Developed in close collaboration with the Asian Women’s Welfare Association (AWWA) and Metta Welfare Association (MWA), the Calm Room was designed using insights from caregivers and families of persons with invisible disabilities. Every detail — from lighting to layout — has been shaped to ensure a space that feels safe, soothing, and supportive.

Step Inside The Calm Room

Upon entering, travellers are greeted by soft neutral tones and gentle lighting, creating a buffer from the hustle of the terminal. A Virtual Changi Experience Ambassador is also available to provide on-demand assistance, ensuring every visitor feels guided and cared for.

The Four Zones Of Calm

Each zone in the Calm Room caters to different sensory needs and preferences — from quiet contemplation to active movement.

  • The Forest: The largest area of the Calm Room features circular biophilic windows projecting serene visuals of Singapore’s lush green landscapes, enhanced by ambient nature sounds. Designed to reduce travel anxiety, it offers varied seating and cosy nooks that balance privacy and openness, allowing users to relax alone or with loved ones.

  • The Den: Created for those who find calm through movement, this zone features padded walls, floors, and seating surfaces for safe sensory exploration. Playful pebble-shaped cushions encourage gentle motion and body awareness, helping users self-regulate and unwind through movement.

  • The Nest: Offering two private rooms with acoustic dampening and colour-tunable lighting, The Nest provides a quiet space for individuals who need extra privacy or sensory control. The adjustable lighting lets users tailor the environment to their comfort and mood.

  • The Welcome Area: A transition space between the bustling terminal and the Calm Room. Equipped with cubby holes for personal belongings, it helps travellers gently ease into the calm environment.

Why Little Steps Loves It:

We love how the Calm Room makes air travel more accessible and inclusive for families with neurodivergent children or travellers with sensory sensitivities. The design balances functionality with warmth — proving that airports can be both efficient and empathetic. Every element has been thoughtfully considered to promote a sense of peace, safety, and dignity in what can often be an overwhelming environment.

Who It's Perfect For:

  • Neurodivergent travellers such as those on the autism spectrum or with sensory processing differences
  • Caregivers and families who need a peaceful environment before boarding

  • Anyone seeking a quiet, restorative break between flights or during long layovers

What Else:

Beyond its beautiful design, what truly stands out is Changi Airport’s commitment to inclusivity and co-creation. The Calm Room was developed hand-in-hand with local welfare associations, therapists, and families, ensuring it meets real needs — not just design trends. With dedicated zones, soundproofing, ambient visuals, and responsive lighting, it’s a first-of-its-kind airport initiative in Singapore that sets a new standard for mindful, people-first travel.
