Today Black Sheep Restaurants founder Syed Asim Hussain officially announced the establishment of its Family Fund as well as continued partnership with local NGO Feeding Hong Kong at the restaurant’s Team Canteen. The Team Canteen is where the Black Sheep community can go for a meal (on the house) and to unwind after a long day, a sort of safe haven and the perfect place to announce the restaurant group’s commitment and mission to serve its own and wider Hong Kong community.
Each quarter, a portion of the hospitality team’s profits will go into the Family Fund, a financial assistance program providing opportunities for the Black Sheep community through interest-free loans that can be used for furthering education and for unforeseen incidents. Hussain reiterated that with the group’s continued success, despite the difficult past few years, they couldn’t have been true to themselves if they did not make this commitment. Gabrielle Kertse
The external mission of the Family Fund is to give back to the external Hong Kong community through its continued partnership with Feeding Hong Kong. This partnership will not only raise much-needed awareness around food waste – around 8 million meals or 3.4 tons of food a day end up in a landfill, as Gabrielle Kirstein, founder of Feeding Hong Kong explained – but also promises HK$3 million in support of this important cause. Feeding Hong Kong are always looking for volunteers to support them – be it as bread runners, delivery assistants or other – check out all the opportunities here.
There is still much to be done with regard to food waste in Hong Kong. A great place to start is by changing our shopping and eating habits as well as raising awareness amongst our children.
