Montessori kindergartens and preschools are popular here in Singapore. Montessori is a method of education that is based on self-directed activity, hands-on learning and collaborative play. Speaking about Montessori, you may have heard of one of the pioneer schools offering Montessori based teaching in Singapore, Josiah Montessori. Founded in 1997 by 3 engineers who had difficulties finding a good preschool for their young toddlers, Josiah Montessori is now one of the best preschools for holistic learning in Singapore.
The preschool was founded on Montessori principles, which was characterized by an emphasis on independence, freedom within limits, and respect for a child’s natural psychological, physical and social developmental needs. It aims to feed children’s natural thirst for knowledge, and to provide an environment that promotes their healthy development. Today, Josiah Montessori has evolved its curriculum and methods in line with modern-day social expectations, children’s individuality and their unique needs. Simply put, the Josiah Way.
Josiah’s philosophy to celebrate the uniqueness in every child is well demonstrated in its curriculum centering around the Montessori method and Musical Arts Program (MAP). Providing a curriculum for young children to be balanced, holistic, and effective in both their body and mind. It aims to provide a broad exposure in 5 areas – vocal training, dance, art, music appreciation, and Chinese speech & drama – as a foundation for children to further develop their passion during the primary years. Josiah also caters to the little dancing kings and queens through dance lessons that include exposure to different dance genres like modern or folk dance.
In addition, their music appreciation module is aimed at fostering a love for classical music through lessons on the history and culture of visual arts. It incorporates philosophies and methodologies of acclaimed music specialists such as Hillary Henshaw, Kodaly, Dalcroze, and Carolyn Lucento. Through storytelling and active role-playing, Chinese speech and drama lessons aim to build confidence in children.
At Josiah, the main teachers are certified and trained in the Diploma of Early Childhood Curriculum and Education (DECCE) or its equivalent. Each of the teachers is required to complete one hundred hours of in-house training based on the Josiah Way training before they begin to work with the children. In order to maintain high standards of education and care for every child, the main teaching faculty work alongside allied/assistant teachers. Parents can expect teachers at Josiah to nurture and guide the children in a safe and stimulating environment where happiness and openness are championed.
Currently, the centers offer infant care (2-18 months), childcare (18 months to 6 years old) and kindergarten (only in Tampines). Check out their website for more information.
