More than just a cooking school, a course at Bali Asli is a true adventure. Imagine starting your day at dawn on a traditional boat with a local fisherman, hiking up a mountain to visit a sacred temple or wandering through the market selecting the freshest local produce? And, imagine learning how to turn all those goodies into a feast when you return to the kitchen.
The cooking experience itself is fantastically hands on. You’re even encouraged to have a tipple while you work – the home-made fruit beers are truly delicious – and the view from the restaurant over Mount Agung is possibly the best on the island. If you’ve ever wanted to know how to make authentic satay, nasi goreng or pepes ikan (fish steamed in banana leaf), this is your chance. You’re in good hands with chef and owner Penny Williams – she apprenticed at the Savoy in London and worked the pans at some of Sydney’s top restaurants before relocating to Bali to work at Alila Manggis before opening her dream restaurant, Bali Asli.
The cooking school is located in the beautiful town of Amlapura in the Karangasem regency. It’s about a 2 hour drive from the airport so you’ll need to make a day of it or you can stay in the seaside towns of Candi Dasa or Amed and really make it a trip to remember.
A cooking and cultural experience of a lifetime plus you come away with some fabulous recipes that you can impress others with at home.
Anyone who likes a dose of adventure and culture with their cooking class.
You don’t have to attend the cooking classes to enjoy Bali Asli. It’s also a restaurant which serves morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea and sunset cocktails. Did we mention the view?
