The Singapore Art Museum (SAM) welcomes families and art lovers back to the Learning Gallery with a refreshed showcase of contemporary works in its 2025 cycle, running from August 2, 2025, to June 28, 2026. This latest edition spotlights the theme of Childhood, inviting audiences to reflect on the wonder, imagination, and fearless curiosity of early years. In celebration of SG60, all eight featured works are by Singaporean artists—ranging from returning favourites to newly commissioned pieces—providing fresh perspectives on identity, home, memory, nature, and more.
You can look forward to rare and celebrated works such as David Chan’s Animal Roulette, on public display again after several years, alongside engaging new additions by Chen Sai Hua Kuan and Ezzam Rahman. Pieces by Nguan and Cultural Medallion recipient Han Sai Por return as part of the thought-provoking lineup, with each artwork presented as a gateway into rethinking the everyday through a child’s eyes. Mediums range from sculpture and installation to photography and interactive pieces—including bungee cord constructions and delicate flowers made from human skin—designed to challenge and inspire all ages.
To mark the opening, SAM will host a free Art Carnival on Saturday, August 2, 2025, transforming the museum’s Level 1 into a vibrant, family-friendly activity zone from 10AM to 5PM. Kids can try hands-on workshops like Build-an-Animal, inspired by Animal Roulette, or assemble sticker-based creations at Pointy Rice’s playful caifan station. There’s also The World Inside My Camera, a paper camera craft exploring artistic perspectives, and Feeling Colours, a sensory art activity linking touch and hue. Other drop-in fun includes fan decorating, gem toss, flower-making with pipe cleaners, sponge painting, and traditional memory games like Kopitiam Hero. Little ones can even win prizes by spinning the carnival wheel or testing their lyrical knowledge in Don’t Forget the Lyrics.
For deeper engagement, curated guided tours will take place throughout the day. Highlights include
These immersive experiences offer a behind-the-scenes look at the artists’ processes, conceptual threads, and the evolving role of contemporary art in society.
Meanwhile, you can enjoy free traditional snacks such as putu piring, nostalgic biscuits, and ice cream cups — perfect for cooling off between activities.
