In this Little Steps interview with Steven Lupton, you can get to know AIS’s Head of School!
Here, Steven reveals why he always displays the children’s artwork on his walls, and why he believes hard work always trumps talent.
He also talks about the importance of how we speak to our children, stating that the language parents use matters deeply. “Praise effort and persistence rather than outcomes, as this builds resilience and a genuine love of learning. Modeling curiosity sends a powerful message that learning is valued every day.”
Do you have a nickname?
I don’t really have a nickname but you might be interested to know that I do have a Chinese name, Chi Wah.
Where were you born and where did you grow up?
I was born in Nelson Bay and grew up in New South Wales, Australia.
Where do you live in the city and why do you love it there?
We are living relatively close to the school. We love the sense of community, the space to walk our dog and the easy commute to AIS for my boys and I.
What's in your lunchbox?
Usually something quick and practical. More often than not, probably something from the Billabong Café at AIS, and plenty of coffee throughout the day.
What or who inspired you to become a Head?
I don’t think I ever aspired to become a Head of School, but I was always highly motivated to be the best at whatever I did. I was fortunate to have some great mentors throughout critical junctures of my life, and I believe part of my obligation is to pay that forward and hopefully have the same impact on others.
Describe your school in five words or less
Purposeful, caring, ambitious, inclusive, authentic.
What's your favorite thing on your desk and why?
Students’ artwork, not necessarily on my desk, but I like to display on my office walls. Not only do they produce some unique and interesting pieces, but it is also a reminder to keep students at the centre of my decision-making.
What are your three favorite children's books?
Books I loved reading with my boys were The Gruffalo, Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy, and just about anything by Roald Dahl. Stories that still bring back memories of bedtime and laughter.
What is the best way for parents to be involved in their children’s education?
By being partners. Stay curious, communicate openly with teachers, support routines at home, and most importantly, let children know that learning matters.
Any tips for parents when applying for schools?
I genuinely think you can feel what a school is like within five minutes of walking through the door. Look beyond results and facilities; not all that glitters is gold. Visit the school and feel the culture, talk to staff, and ask yourself whether your child, and yourself, will feel known, supported, and happy there.
What's the best advice a teacher or Head ever gave you?
"Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard". I have seen countless examples of highly talented people not achieving the levels they could have because they didn’t put in the effort required.
