Nothing’s going to stop us from showing some love to our country, not even a pandemic. Having said that, Singapore will still hold its National Day Parade (NDP2020) on Aug 9, 2020, but not in the traditional format. It will be split into morning and evening shows, with participant numbers drastically reduced in line with COVID-19 guidelines. Fewer than 300 participants will be involved in both segments of the show, and the committee does not plan to allow spectators into the evening show at the moment. Expect a long day of celebration at the comfort of your own home as NDP2020 will be brought into every Singapore home. Singapore’s 55th birthday bash – which features the theme Together, A Stronger Singapore – will see many parade segments moved to the heartland and streamed live over TV as well as Internet platforms. It will be a digitalized and immersive experience with a series of home engagement activities to encourage audience participation throughout the day.
Bringing NDP to our homes will be achieved through three main components: The Strength of Our Nation, Active Participation by Singaporeans, and the Evening Show.
Morning: The Strength of Our Nation
Celebrate our history, tradition, strength, and unity built up over the past 55 years in this morning segment. NDP2020 will begin with the Prime Minister’s National Day Message, followed by a parade at the Padang reviewed by the President. For the first time, the classic NDP favorites will move across Singapore and through the heartlands. The “Fly Our Flag” aerial display will see the state flag flying past homes across the nation, while the “Roar of Unity” by our F-15SG fighter jets will soar around the island. These displays will also pay special tribute to our frontline fighters, essential workers, and everyday Singaporeans for their strength and resilience as we collectively overcome challenges and emerge stronger.
Afternoon: Active Participation by Singaporeans
The afternoon session of NDP2020 aims to encourage Singaporeans to participate in a series of home engagement activities from home. From bonding over a cooking activity to working out together, let it be a day of fun and engagement for your family!
Evening: The Show
The last celebration for the day will also be another first for NDP! Expect for an evening celebratory show with smaller-group items to convey a greater sense of intimacy and warmth. It will also feature performers comprising everyday Singaporeans as well as well-known local celebrities.
