Nexus International School (Singapore) recently celebrated “Telling Our Stories” at Nexus Book Week. It was an opportunity for our learners to listen to others’ stories and cultivate a love for reading, with eight authors and illustrators visiting the school to run workshops and share how they tell their stories.

One special event that they held was at the end of the week, where there were shared reading sessions that involved every learner in the school, from Nursery to Year 13.
During the sessions, older learners were paired with younger learners and shared a book they love, from picture books and poems to books they grew up with. They also paired learners based on their mother tongue to engage in world languages reading, enabling learners from similar cultures to connect with each other.
As younger learners practised their reading, listening, and understanding skills, older learners modeled these skills for the younger ones. Older learners were also challenged to create activities for younger learners. This was a great chance for learners of different ages to bond as a school community. Most importantly, it was super fun!
Nexus also uses shared reading sessions for Year 6 learners who are transitioning to Year 7, with reading sessions hosted in the Secondary Library. This helps learners feel more comfortable with the environment while getting to know secondary learners in the process.
Nexus Book Week embraces the school’s philosophy, The Nexus Way, by emphasizing the importance of relationships and inclusion in the learning process. Through this event, learners are encouraged to engage in activities that promote a sense of community and respect for each other’s perspectives. As a K-12 school, they also believe in cultivating a strong relationship between all learners, meaning that even preschool-aged learners have opportunities to interact with older learners and vice versa.
