Amek Gambar: Peranakans and Photography
A Cultural Exhibition In Singapore

Looking back to the history, interestingly, the first commercially viable form of photography was invented way back in 1839 in France. Without further doubts, it did quickly make its way to Southeast Asia and among the many first key subjects to be captured were the Peranakans! It is indeed why Peranakans are widely captured in the historical photographs of Singapore. This event is catered to everyone who has a knack for photography or simply in love with the history and culture of the Peranakans. It includes early photographs of the community as well as a portrait of a Peranakan family taken way back in 1958 or 1958 which is a part of Singapore’s National Collection. The exhibition includes studio and amateur photographs of Peranakans taken in Malaysia, Indonesia, and Myanmar.

This exhibition is in conjunction with a donation of 2535 photographs given to the Peranakan Museum by Mr and Mrs Lee Kip Lee which explores the role of photography in the lives of the Peranakans.

If you have a knack for photography or just a huge love for the Peranakan community, this is the exhibition for you as there will be more than 2000 photographs for you to gain some inspiration.

May 5, 2018 - February 3, 2019 from 10am-7pm (Mondays to Thursdays, Weekends) & 10am-9pm (Fridays).
