Escape the city and crowds to experience Macau’s beaches this summer. Offering fresh air, relaxation and plenty of family-friendly beach activities and fun. Macau’s two main beaches are set on beautiful stretches of coastline on the southern side of Coloane Island.

Hac Sa Beach

The largest and most well-known beach is Hac Sa Beach, meaning black sand when translated from Chinese. The beach is four kilometers long and is famous for its black sand. The water is quite clean and suitable for swimming. Popular with locals and tourists, it does get busy over the weekends, but there is plenty of space and activities for everyone to enjoy. From jet-ski and sail boat hire, plus other water activities. Nearby are barbecue pits, a campsite and a few dining spots and shops selling snacks and souvenirs. If the beach is a little too crowded for your liking, there is the Hac Sa Reservoir Park! Here you can hike, rent a pedal boat or go grass-sliding!

Across the road is Hac Sa Sports and Recreation Park, where facilities include a pool with a kids wading area, tennis courts, a large playground and for little ones a small race track with electric motorbikes for hire. All that salty air worked up an appetite? You’re in for a treat, as Hac Sa is the home of Fernando's, renowned for serving the best Portuguese food in town. After lunch why not take a stroll along the boardwalk and enjoy the views of the South China Sea.

Cheoc Van Beach

The second of Macau’s beaches, Cheoc Van, is smaller and quieter, with golden sand, and cleaner and more picturesque than the popular Hac Sa Beach. Nestled in a charming little bay, it is surrounded by forest and around the corner from Coloane Village, another nice place for a cultural visit. Popular with families, it offers a safe cordoned off area for swimmers, rock pools for the kids to explore in and clean sand to play and dig in. Check out the fab public swimming pool with a kids area, located right on the beach open from May to October.

Looking for a place to eat? No worries, Ristorante La Gondola, serves yummy Italian kid-friendly bites including pizza, fresh seafood, and ice-cream. Situated on the beachfront you can soak up the rays and relax al fresco style. Parents must try a glass of fruity Sangria. Nearby, Pousada de Coloane hotel offers Portuguese food and has a beautiful terrace overlooking the beach, also a wonderful place to stay the night on a budget if the beach wiped you and the kids out.
